The Earth Charter Initiative

This June 2012, the world's governments are set to reconvene in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 Earth Summit. Despite the failure of past UN negotiations on climate change, the upcoming Rio Summit holds promise of opening new windows into the issue. Conversely however, the aforementioned failure, beckons slight apprehension towards the Rio meeting.

It is evident that states and large corporations take little note of the concept of ‘going green’ and justify their actions under the pretense that their actions cease to effect the environment and change the fundamental determinants of our ecosystem. Rather, these actors seek solely to enjoy the profits of privatization, ignoring the nature of today’s perpetual economic crisis.

20 years after the first Earth Summit, the state of our environment is urgent!

We the undersigned demand that the governments’ meeting at the Summit of 2012 adopt The Earth Charter, which truly aims at promoting a transition to sustainable modes of living and a global society based on an ethical framework that includes respect and care for community life, ecological integrity, universal human rights, respect for diversity, economic justice, democracy and a culture of peace.
