PAST EVENTS

Friday, June 15th to Saturday, June 23rd 2012 - Rio + 20 Summit

During Rio+20, Alternatives will be organizing or co-organizing the following activities:

  • Panel Discussion: Resisting Canada’s Criminal Assault On The Environment

Activity organized by Alternatives

DATE: June 18th 2012, from 11:30 am to 1:30pm, at the Peoples Summit, Tenda 2

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY:
Canada is a natural resource superpower with large mining projects and a huge oil development in the Tar Sands. Its opting out of Kyoto Protocol has generated worldwide condemnation. Canadian multinational mining corporations have unleashed resistance from local and Indigenous communities in Latin America and Asia. The Free Trade Agreement with Europe, designed to favour export of oil from the Tar Sands is challenged by environmental groups. Vocal mobilizations have occurred across Canada and Quebec mobilizing tens of thousands of people against such projects as the Tar Sand, shale gas exploration and fracking or the large mining project planned for Northern Quebec, called Plan Nord. A key feature of these mobilizations has been the participation of Indigenous communities, grassroot organizations, youth and students, and other sectors that have organized collective resistance. People’s resistance against resource grab is a local, national and international struggle.

Chair: Michel Lambert (Alternatives)
Speakers: Nathalie Guay(CSN); Patrick Bonin (AQLPA); Ben Powless (Indigenous Environmental Network) ; Tetet Lauron (Ibon International); Maxime Combes (AIETEC-IPAM);
